Show Notes & Summary
Carolyn is a brand and marketing specialist with a 20-year history at Westpac, Merrill Lynch and her own business, she helps people discover their purpose, articulate their values, unearth their stories and embed them into your culture, marketing and communications.
WHAT DOES conscious marketing MEAN?
According to Carolyn, the world of marketing (and its subset advertising) is deeply broken. In 2015, over $600 billion dollars was spent on advertising alone. Multiply that by 10 and you’ll get the real cost of that marketing.
In any given day we’re be exposed to 3000 marketing messages. While the medium has increased 10-fold, the quality of the message has regressed in direct proportion.
As consumers, according to Carolyn, we must become far more conscious about how we respond (or not) to all this marketing. Marketers must become far more conscious of what is sold and how it is sold.
Conscious Marketing reinvents marketing so that it’s a force for good in the world.
Carolyn exudes purpose, and that seeps into the tools she use as well (and we love sharing productivity tools with our community).
These are her favorite:
- Xero – a great cloud app to help organise all your accounting and bookkeeping needs
- Facebook, Twitter, etc. – the usual stack of social media tools for engaging with your audience/community
- Eventbrite – a popular online event-booking tool
- Mailchimp – another popular e-newsletter publishing service
- Insightly – a CRM suited to small businesses to help you track your sales leads
- Spreadsheets – these still work a treat for a large majority of smal business owners
A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle
Summary: With his bestselling spiritual guide The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle inspired millions of readers to discover the freedom and joy of a life lived “in the now.” In A New Earth, Tolle expands on these powerful ideas to show how transcending our ego-based state of consciousness is not only essential to personal happiness, but also the key to ending conflict and suffering throughout the world. Tolle describes how our attachment to the ego creates the dysfunction that leads to anger, jealousy, and unhappiness, and shows readers how to awaken to a new state of consciousness and follow the path to a truly fulfilling existence.

FAVORITE ANIMAL: ELEPHANT
Carolyn chose the elephant as her favorite animal. She’s always had an affinity for them because they’re strong, solid, last a long time, and very human-like. They show a great capacity for compassion.
Elephants symbolize strength, royalty, connection to ancient wisdom, removal of obstacles and barriers, confidence, patience, using education opportunities, commitment, gentleness, communicating in relationships, discernment, intelligence, compassion.
